California Car Insurance Requirements

The State of California follows a Tort system meaning someone must be found to be at fault for causing the accident, and that person and their insurance company is responsible for all the damages.

Minimum insurance requirements include:

  • $15,000 for injury/death to one person
  • $30,000 for injury/death to more than one person
  • $5,000 for damage to property.

*Required limits for drivers in the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan are $10,000/$20,000/$3,000 Limits

You may also arrange with the state to make a cash deposit or handle a surety bond worth more than $35,000.

After you obtain auto insurance, your provider will electronically report the info on your private-use liability policy to the CA DMV. Without proper insurance, your car registration could be suspended, you could receive a traffic ticket, or your vehicle may be impounded.
