Louisiana Car Insurance Requirements

The state of Louisiana follows a Tort system meaning someone must be found to be at fault for causing the accident, and that person and their insurance company is responsible for all the damages.

Louisiana requires all state residents who are completing certain driver’s license transactions or trying to register a vehicle to provide proof of insurance coverage.

Minimum Insurance Coverages Include:

  • $15,000 per person for bodily injury or death
  • $30,000 per accident for bodily injury or death
  • $25,000 for property damage

Proof of Insurance:

Insurance carriers must report liability coverages to the state. If you are caught with no insurance, you risk your license plates being taken and your vehicle impounded.
