Illinois Car Insurance Requirements

The state of Illinois follows a Tort system meaning someone must be found to be at fault for causing the accident, and that person and their insurance company is responsible for all the damages.

Minimum insurance coverage amounts include:

  • $20,000 of coverage for an injury or death to one person in a single accident.
    • $40,000 of coverage for injuries or deaths to more than one person in a single accident.
    • $15,000 property damage coverage.

Proof of Insurance and Financial Responsibility:

The state won’t automatically know if you have the proper insurance coverage; you’ll have to provide the proof yourself. And, you must do this by showing the insurance card issued to you by your carrier. If you don’t, you risk having your license plates suspended.
