Washington D.C. Car Insurance Requirements
Washington D.C. follows a No-Fault system meaning your insurance company will make payments for your injury claims regardless of fault, up to a specified limit.

To register a car in the District of Columbia, you must have the following minimum insurance:
- $25,000 per person for injury
- $50,000 per accident for injury
- $10,000 per accident for property damage
- Uninsured Motorist
- $25,000 per person for injury
- $50,000 per accident for injury
- $5,000 per accident for property damage, subject to $200 deductible
Proof of Insurance and Financial Responsibility
You must carry proof of insurance with you at all times. If you are stopped and cannot provide proof, you’ll receive a fine of $30. If you fail to carry insurance, you risk higher fines.
